Wolves in Native American Culture

The wolf's strong commitment to its family was acknowledged by Native American tribes, and many drew comparisons between wolf pack members and tribe members. Many tribes admired the wolf for its superior and cooperative hunting abilities. Finally, the wolf was recognized for defending its territory against intruders, a responsibility that each group faced.

The following are some examples of the wolf's appearance in Native American religion and mythology. The Eskimos told the story of Qisaruatsiaq, an elderly woman who was abandoned and left to live alone, finally turning into a wolf. "Shunk manitu tanka," or "animal that looks like a dog but is a powerful spirit," was the Sioux term for the wolf. To improve hunting success, Cheyenne medicine men rubbed warrior arrows against wolf fur. In a ceremony where they purported to bring back to life the chief's slain son by wearing wolf garb, the Nootka celebrated spiritual ties to the wolf. The Cherokee refused to kill a wolf because they believed the animal's siblings would seek vengeance. They also emulated the wolf's walk to protect their feet from frostbite. To hunt, the Crow donned wolf skins. The Mandan wore wolf tails on their moccasins as a symbol of victory in war. To help with difficult birthing, Hidatsa women rubbed wolf skin on their bellies. When the northern lights shone in the winter, the Cree believed divine wolves came to visit. Dead wolves were propped up by the Ahtena, who would occasionally serve them ceremonial meals. Wolves are said to provide humans with food and hides in Chippewa legends. The Delaware tribe believed that a wolf's howl may signal a change in weather. Wolf is one of the Katchinas, the Hopi's costumed dancers who embody the universe's powers.

The Pawnee, who lived in what is now Nebraska and Kansas, may have had the closest relationship with the wolf of all the tribes. The Pawnee had such a strong bond with wolves that their wolf hand-signal is the same as their Pawnee hand-signal. Even neighboring tribes referred to them as the Wolf People. The wolf coming and going from the spirit realm, running down the Wolf Road, also known as the Milky Way, was symbolized by Sirius, the Wolf Star, appearing and disappearing in a cyclical pattern. Our galaxy was also known as the Wolf Trail, or the Route to Heaven, by the Blackfoot tribe. The Pawnee, like the Hidatsa and Oto tribes, employed wolf bundles, pouches made from wolf skins, to store and safeguard ceremonial and magical items.
