Thor, the Giant's Kettle, and the Midgard Serpent

The Norse gods enjoyed dining in between their epic wars and incredible adventures. They once invited themselves to a giant named Aegir's hall, where he maintained a good table. Aegir didn't dare to refuse them, either for fear of their wrath or for fear of the curse that always befell the inhospitable (as Geirröth discovered to his great cost), but he did say he couldn't properly serve them unless they brought him the world's largest kettle, which belonged to the giant Hymir, renowned for his strength as well as his bad temper.

Thor, Odin's powerful and fiery son, jumped to help right away. Tyr, Hymir's son—or grandson, depending on whose story you believe—accompanied them to Hymir's hall to assure their reception.

Thor's goats were hitched to his chariot, and they sped to Hymir's lair in the frigid wastes. Tyr's mother and grandmother greeted him warmly, but they cautioned him that Hymir would not be pleased with his visitors, and they suggested that the newly arrived gods hide beneath the beam from which Hymir's cookware hung. This is exactly what they did. When Hymir came and learned of his visitors through his womenfolk, he smashed the beam and all of his kettles except the mile-deep wonder Thor had come to get. Unfazed by the warm greeting, the guests took a step forward and introduced themselves.

Hymir served them supper, as though he was obligated to do so. When Thor ate two of his oxen by himself, he grumbled and declared he'd have to go fishing the next day for the next night's meal. He went on to say that the gods were too small to help with this.

Thor, of course, was adamant about joining the fishing trip. He killed another of Hymir's oxen and carried it along after being told to acquire his own bait.

Hymir first rowed before anchoring, casting his own bait, and catching two whales. When Thor advised rowing further out, Hymir stated it would be foolish and deadly, because the Midgard Serpent, Loki's monster-child who encircled the globe, lay beneath the deep oceans.

Thor was ready for a rematch after his humbling meeting with the Midgard Serpent in Utgard-hall. Loki's He rowed the boat out to sea as far as he could. He cast his line deep, baiting his hook with the head of Hymir's cow. The Serpent seized the bait and yanked so hard on the line that Thor was thrown against the boat's gunwale. Thor hung in there. He pressed his feet on the boat's hull, and they pierced the hull and grounded on the seabed. When he pulled, the Serpent's head broke the surface of the water and slammed into the side of the boat. Thor glared, the lightning flashed, and he slammed his thunder-hammer into the Serpent. The Serpent returned the stare and spit venom. Hymir, terrified, leaned forward and slashed Thor's fishing line, causing the Serpent to fall back into the depths.

Thor's rage enraged Hymir to the point where the giant soared over the rim of the boat and dove headlong into the water. Thor abandoned his companions and swam back to shore, dragging the whales behind him.

Thor may put on airs and claim to have caught the Midgard Serpent, but he hadn't earned the large kettle or the right to call himself strong until he could break Hymir's drinking cup, according to Hymir. Then Hymir tosses the cup at one of his hall's stone pillars. The Serpent returned the stare and spit venom. Many giants died in the freezing wastes after that, and none pursued Thor back to Aegir's hall and the gods' feast.
