Viking berserkers were powerful warriors who fought in a trance-like fury, symbolising unbridled rage and bloodlust. But, in reality, did such people ever exist? Kim Hjardar, a historian, examines.
At the commencement of the Viking Age, around 800, there were few permanent military institutions in Scandinavia, but as society came increasingly under the leadership of a single king, a variety of such organizations grew. The retinue, a brotherhood of warriors serving a common master, was the most important organization. In the Middle Ages, it evolved into an aristocratic class and became the principal source of power for medieval kings.
In Scandinavia, though, there was a more sinister brotherhood of warriors who couldn't fit into the post-heathen society of Christianity. Instead, it only survived in the realms of sagas, art, and folklore, frequently transforming into shield-biting war demons and icons of evildoing. But the sources disclose the presence of men surviving on the edge of life and death, inspired by conflict and distinguished by their frenzied battle rage, beneath the myth and the shroud of history.
The sources' descriptions of 'berserkers' and 'wolfskins' straddle the line between fiction and reality, and it's difficult for us to believe that such people, full of uncontrollable destructive force, really existed. They did, however. The berserkers and wolfskins (also known as 'heathen wolves') were a unique group of highly trained and dangerous warriors linked to Odin.
