The mushroom genus Psilocybe, also known as “Teonanácatl” in Nahuatl (meaning “god mushroom”—compound of the terms teo(tl) (god) and nanácatl (mushroom)), has a long history of use in Mesoamerica. Teonanácatl was frequently consumed by the Aztec upper class at festivals and other large gatherings. Obtaining mushrooms, according to Fernando Alvarado Tezozomoc, was often a challenging undertaking. They were both expensive and difficult to find, necessitating all-night hunts. The use of mushrooms is described by both Fray Bernardino de Sahagn and Fray Toribio de Benavente Motolinia. The Aztecs drank chocolate and ate honey-glazed mushrooms. Before consuming the sacrament, those participating in mushroom rites would fast. Monanacahuia, which means “to mushroom oneself,” is the term for ingesting mushrooms.
Mushrooms had been offered from the beginning… They didn’t eat anything else that night and simply drank chocolate. They also ate the honeyed mushrooms. They danced and grieved when the mushrooms had taken effect on them. Some, however, entered and sat on their seats near the house while still in control of their senses; they did nothing else except sit there nodding. The use of the fungus among the Montezumanic people is described in several recorded notes influenced by Catholic dogma. Many prisoners were allegedly slaughtered, their flesh consumed, and their hearts extracted at the emperor’s coronation ceremony. Those who were invited to the feast ate mushrooms, which caused those who ate them to become insane, according to Diego Durán. Following the Aztecs‘ defeat, the Spanish outlawed traditional religious rites and rituals that they deemed “pagan idolatry,” including the usage of ceremonial mushrooms.
