The heart ('yollotl'), which housed the 'teyollia,' the principle of life itself, as well as a person's feelings, intelligence, and spirit, was one of the most important spiritual centres or'souls' for the Aztecs. The heart and the blood that flowed in and out of it contained life, so the most valuable present they could give to their gods was their own life, heart, and blood. The Aztecs thought that their gods had created everything in their universe, including land, water, maize, and animals, as well as bestowing the gift of life upon them. However, in order for all of this to exist, the gods had to give up a portion of their divine power and invest it in all of nature; this is why there were gods of maize, rain, and other natural phenomena.
The Aztec Mythology A had to regularly renew this divine force – by making offerings of the life(blood) of animals, plants, and humans – in order for these living beings to maintain their strength and the world to continue on its course. They took the heart as the ultimate sign of a person's life, lifting it to the Sun god and then burning it; in the smoke, it could reach up to the sky and to the sun, which would take on new vigor and continue to give light and heat, allowing life on earth to continue.
