The Eagle Warrior may appear benign at first when compared to the warriors depicted in codices. Because the Eagle Warrior lacks the colors, patterns, and weapons of the Codex Mendoza warriors, he lacks the threatening image that these soldiers may have had. However, it’s important to recall that the sculpture was originally painted and coated in feathers, so it would have appeared more lifelike in the House of the Eagles.
The Eagle Warrior stood beside the House of the Eagles’ doorway, most likely as a guardian figure. He was seated on a bench with relief sculpture depicting soldiers advancing towards a ball (called a zacatapayolli) into which bloodletting tools were placed. Warriors pierced areas of their bodies, such as their tongues or ears, to allow blood to flow onto paper, which was then burned. The Aztec Mexica thought that the gods expected blood as exchange for their creation of the universe, thus the blood was offered to them as penance.
Another life-size terracotta figure stood at a second entryway in the House of the Eagles, but this time it was Mictlantecuhtli, the god of the Underworld, rather than an eagle warrior. The skeletal god, at over six feet tall, is as intimidating as the Eagle Warrior, if not more so. His clawed claws are outstretched and his lips is slightly open as he leans forward. Hair or paper ornaments would have been inserted into the openings on top of his head in the past. Mictlantecuhtli, like the Eagle Warrior, is skilled at firing terracotta on a massive scale.
Although the original splendor of the armed Eagle Warrior was destroyed, one can only imagine the sole presence of this sculpture hovering in front of the entrance like warriors. actually gathered. Both the Eagle Warrior and Mictlantecuhtli sculptures demonstrate the extremely active role of warrior and divine sculpture in the Aztecs Mexica culture.
