Sitting Bull is a Lakota Sioux who was born in 1831. Sitting Bull grew to prominence as a leader of Native American resistance to European-American rule and white culture, yet he never advocated violence against settlers. Instead, he talked about how Native Americans should be permitted to keep their culture without being forced to embrace European-American traditions. Sitting Bull was slain by authorities on December 15, 1890, at the age of 59, while evading arrest for riding a horse beyond of town limits despite several warnings from law enforcement officers.
