In Aztec warfare, there were two main goals to deliver the Aztec-inspired. The first goal was political: subjugation of enemy city states (Altepetl) to exact tribute and expand Aztec political hegemony. The second goal was religious and socioeconomic in nature: the capture of captives to be sacrificed in religious ceremonies. The Aztecs style of warfare was also influenced by their dual objectives. Most warfare was primarily political, driven by the Aztec nobility's expectation for the Tlahtoni [tatoani] to provide economic growth through expansion and the commoners' expectation of moving up in society through successful warfare. A ruler-first elect's action was always to launch a military campaign, which served the dual purpose of demonstrating his ability as a warrior and thus demonstrating to subject polities that his rule would be as harsh on any rebellious behavior as his predecessor's, and of providing abundant captives for his coronation ceremony. A failed coronation campaign was viewed as a bad omen for a Tlatoani's rule, as it could lead to rebellions of city states subjected by previous rulers and the Aztec nobility distrusting his ability to rule — as was the case for Tizoc, who was poisoned by the Aztec nobles after several failed military campaigns.
