The Frog is a Native American emblem for riches and abundance. When a frog's tongue brushes against another species in art, it symbolizes the sharing of knowledge and power. Frogs are believed to prevent loss in many local cultures, which is why little Frog coins are placed in handbags to avoid money loss. The Haida also carved Frogs into their house posts, believing that the Frogs would keep the posts from collapsing.
According to one of the Haida legends, there were no frogs on Haida Gwaii, the Haida people's homeland, until recently. According to a Haida legend, a Frog Chief was traveling through the Island when he came across a black bear.
The hopping Frog Chief amused the black bear, who tried to step on it for amusement. By hopping between the bear's legs, the little frog was able to flee. The Frog Chief dashed back to his village, screaming about his horrific incident to the other Frogs. Fearing that this massive predator would discover their hamlet, the Frogs packed their belongings and fled the island forever, expecting to never see another bear.
According to another Frog Pacific Northwest legend, a tribe was starving since no one could catch any fish or game, so a warrior went out in search of sustenance. The warrior came upon a bird who told him to follow him so he could assist him. The warrior was taken to a Frog by the bird, who allowed him to don his skin. The warrior hunted enough food for the entire community with the Frogskin, but as time passed, the warrior transformed into a Frog and sailed to sea. He lived there till his death, catching fish and other seafood for his people.
