In Norse mythology, Fenrir is a giant wolf who breaks free from his chains at Ragnarök, the gods’ twilight, murders Odin, and is eventually murdered by Odin’s son Vidarr. Fenrir is the son of Loki, the trickster god, and the brother of Jormungandr, the World Serpent, and Hel, the jotunn.
He's also a He's also known as the Fenrir Wolf (or Fenrir-wolf) and Vanargand ("monster of the van"), which means "beast of expectation" because he was anticipated to be involved in the gods' demise. His name is pronounced Fen-rear, and he was the son of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Due to a prophecy that they would cause problems for the gods of Asgard, Loki's offspring were kidnapped from Jotunheim, the giants' country, where they lived with their mother, and taken to Asgard. Jormungandr was then flung into the sea, Hel was thrown into the depths of Niflheim, and Odin eventually tied Fenrir to a rock. At Ragnarök, all three children would seek vengeance.
The story of Fenrir, like all of Norse Mythology, survives today through a Christianized lens and it is difficult to tell what aspects of the tales were original Norse beliefs and what are later interpretations. There are a number of wolves mentioned in Norse Mythology (notably Fenrir’s sons Hati and Skoll) but it is thought that most, if not all, were originally Fenrir as some tales attribute to him certain actions later given to Hati and Skoll.
Although Fenrir is understood as an antagonist of the gods and one of the “villains” of the story of Ragnarök, the original story makes clear that Odin’s and the other gods’ treatment of the great wolf contributed to his siding with the forces of chaos against them.
As a result, Norse mythology and everything associated with it have become increasingly popular. Visual art, music, jewelry, decoration, and business have all reflected this. The Fenrir wolf can now be found in paintings, tattoos, jewelry, and bracelets and necklaces.

The viking wolf, Fenrir, remained a fearsome force in Norse mythology even after the conversion to Christianity. In fact, some accounts claim that he was chained up by the god Tyr as a punishment for killing Odin’s son Baldr. However, at Ragnarok (the end of days), Fenrir will break his chains and devour Odin himself before being slain by Odin’s son Vidar.
