Anxiety and despair levels have risen dramatically in our country over the last year. From physical health and safety to the emotional weight of racial, political, and spiritual conflicts, there seems to be something new to be concerned about every day. For many people, the pressures of the previous year merely added to their mental exhaustion. Because the reality of our damaged world is evident, you must choose between feeding your faith and feeding your fear. If you don't make a conscious effort to choose faith over fear, fear will drown you.
This is also true when confronted with difficult inquiries regarding your beliefs. You can find 100 responses to back up any point of view on the subject. You can follow articles down a rabbit hole of information that contradicts your beliefs. Allowing oneself to pursue those doubts will almost certainly lead to their growth. Instead, you can nourish your faith by immersing yourself in the reality of God's word, His love, and a strong church community.
Faith comes naturally to certain people. To be honest, it doesn't always work for me. I've woken up far too many times and chosen fear or doubt. It doesn't feel like a choice right now. From the time I open my eyes, my heart is racing. As I go about my day, I let doubts and anxieties to enslave my thoughts. Who would pick such a thing for themselves? My day would be different if I just took a moment to focus on Christianity and allow the Spirit to rest my heart. So, whether it's a conscious or unconscious decision, it's a decision.
Rather than waking up and making the unconscious decision to choose doubt, now that I'm aware of the conflict between faith and fear, I combat those thoughts with the reality of God's word. I listen to worship music that brings me serenity. I pray that God gives me the strength to choose my confidence in Him over sinking into the dark hole of terror throughout the day. Sometimes all it takes to tip the scales is a single decision to choose faith over doubts and worries. A simple prayer in which you acknowledge God's presence in your life and beg for His help.
Life is far too short, and God has far too much work for us to be slaves. Jesus promised that His followers would have a life that was full with pleasure, peace, and spiritual and emotional energy. Despite this, we make judgments based on fear rather than faith on a regular basis. Jennifer Slattery, author and speaker, shows us how to understand where fear has a stronghold in our lives and how our identity as children of God can help us transition from fear to loyal, brave living in her book Faith Over Fear.
Jesus - Son Of God has a lot more in store for us than we can realize, and He's absolutely dedicated to completing what we're working on. Fear keeps us from moving forward, but His perfect love has the power to cast out every fear!
