DID VIKING BERSERKERS EXIST?
Berserkers' dreadful reputation makes them seem more mythological than genuine individuals who lived and fought across Medieval Scandinavia. They are depicted as nearly otherworldly, messy, and murderous barbarians who destroyed everything in their path in popular culture; history remembers them as the most vicious of all Germanic warriors. But how much of it is factual, and how many berserker legends are simply extensions of Norse mythology? Regrettably, we must disappoint the skeptics: berserkers were noble savages, just as the legends tell. HOW DID BERSERKERS GO BERSERK?
The most likely reason for 'becoming insane' is psychology, not history or archaeology. Psychiatrists believe that Viking warriors performed spiritual rites before battles, after which they plunged into a condition of self-induced hysteria, losing control of their minds.
Self-induced hysteria forced the berserkers into a dissociative state of consciousness, causing them to act only on their underlying instincts and primal impulses. Berserkers were able to transcend social limitations and critical reasoning, letting them to act more ferociously and savagely than any other warriors in history. Old Norse religion and social traditions, which found their explanations in often violent Norse mythology, justified and even romanticized the Viking manner of battle preparation. In the sagas, Norse gods never had long and deep internal debates about right and wrong, but they always managed to become heroes. It's no surprise that self-induced hysteria, like other pagan rituals, began to disappear with the Christianization of Scandinavia in the 12th century.
Although the psychomotor automatism of the Viking ceremonies should not be used as an excuse to act rashly, it might be explained by exhaustion and emotional catharsis. This phenomenon, sometimes known as diminished responsibility or diminished capacity, is still employed as a defense in criminal law.
WHAT WEAPONS DID BERSERKERS USE?
Viking berserker wielded one, like every other Viking warrior, but the first and most important weapon Viking berserker carried was a psychological one: dread. A fighter's greatest advantage is never his weapon; rather, it is his convictions and faith that neither fire nor iron can harm him. That kind of mentality makes foes fearful, making them question whether they are genuinely willing and capable of standing in front of a berserker who is agitated and costumed as a wolf, bear, or other terrifying animal in the middle of a conflict. Furthermore, because their opponents were already familiar with them and their fighting style, a single mention of the word berserk may compel them to disband and flee in front of these fearsome Viking warriors. The demoralizing effect is heightened when we realize that they typically went into battle naked, with only animal fur on their bodies.
The Viking berserker's second weapon was a sword. This weapon is well-made and was derived from an antique Roman sword. It was built to both take and inflict a great deal of punishment. It was also made lighter and stronger by having indentations running the length of the blade. As a result, the Vikings were able to swing powerful and forceful hits. Berserkers fought with a massive blade that was typically double-wielded, unlike most Vikings who battled with swords.
The ax, of course, is the third weapon that needs to be mentioned because it is one of the most commonly associated with Vikings. For most Viking warriors, an ax was a particularly useful weapon because they were essentially shock troops who rushed into battle, hoping to eliminate their opponents before they ever understood what was going on. It was small and convenient for close combat, particularly if the warrior was well-trained in its use, and all old Norse fighters were, first and foremost, Viking berserkers.

The Viking culture is one of the most fascinating and brutal in all of history. Vikings were brave warriors with a thirst for battle, but they also had their own set of rules that they lived by. One rule was that you could never show fear on the battlefield – or else your opponents would see it as an opportunity to attack. This cultural trait lives on today within the Berserker tradition practiced by modern-day Marines.

Berserkers were famous for wearing wolf pelts and biting their shields while fighting in order to enhance the warrior‘s already fierce appearance. Berserkers would often go into such a trance of fury that they would feel no pain from wounds inflicted upon themselves and ignore any injury done to others around them during combat, which made them seem immune to pain and unafraid of death.
