Easter is one of my favorite times of the year! Easter is the day on which we, together with Christians all across the world, commemorate the most important event in human history: the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave. Among all the facts of mortality, nothing is as certain as death's end. Those who have been abandoned are suffering in agonizing and catastrophic pain. The anguish of separation can be felt by a devastated and lonely father, a grieved widow, and an orphaned child.
Victory over Death
People must accept Jesus as God's Son, Savior, and Lord by trusting in His sacrifice on their behalf. They made the choice of their own volition. Let us continue to think about Jesus' words. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whomever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life..." "Should not perish" - The gospel's good news is that, because of Jesus, we no longer have to fear spiritual death or eternal punishment in hell. We didn't have to suffer that fate because Jesus died in our place – as our blameless substitute.
When a person's earthly life comes to an end, however, Jesus explains that they are assigned to one of two groups: those who perish or those who live eternally. There is no "I'm not participating" or "Limbo" between the phrases "I'm not participating" and "Limbo." Those who have ever lived will be sentenced to spiritual death, an eternal condition of estrangement from God and the goodness of Heaven, on the Day of Judgment. Alternatively, they will be given eternal life, a blessed existence in God's presence for all eternity with access to all of Heaven's blessings. Because of our sin, we've all been assigned to the default category of "perish," or eternal death.
The apostle Paul wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 3:24: 6:23). One way or another, we're all going to die. But the story doesn't end there. Every one of us will continue to exist as unique individuals capable of learning, teaching, and other activities, just as He did in the spirit realm when He taught those who were able to learn.
